— The Steamboat Springs High School Alpine ski team successfully opened its season Friday, coming away with multiple top finishes.

Competing in Winter Park, the Steamboat girls swept the podium and finished in first place.

The boys team got one skier on the podium and finished second overall.

“As a whole, the team did really awesome,” coach Anje Worrell said. “It was a lot better than I expected them to do. It gives them a gauge of where they’re at.”

Leading the way for Steamboat was a strong girls effort in the giant slalom.

Suzanne Lyon finished first, Megan Rosa was second and Sarah White was third.

McKenzie Millard (fourth), Mallory Hoots (sixth), Rachel Grubbs (eighth), Mariah Hoots (17th), Martha Anderson (23rd) and Lindsey Adler (35th) rounded out the finishers for Steamboat.

On the boys side, Connor Bernard was second, and Tommy Lyon was fifth. Willy Gunn finished ninth, Dane Dixson was 13th and Jake Barker was 32nd.

“It was a turny course, but we had been doing that type of training at Howelsen,” Worrell said. “They weren’t surprised. We prepared them for that.”

The team next competes in a slalom event Friday at Howelsen Hill. The race begins at 10 a.m.
