Steamboat Springs — The script the Glenwood Springs girls basketball team has written the past couple of years just doesn’t seem to change. 

The Demons used superior athleticism and an active defense to easily beat Steamboat, 62-28, on Friday. 

Glenwood (10-0 overall, 1-0 in league) created 32 turnovers and had three players score in the double digits on its way to establishing itself as the team to beat in the Western Slope League. 

“It’s pretty early, but these kids are unbelievable,” Glenwood coach Bryan Derby said. “I think these girls could make a long run if we stay healthy. I believe this team can go a long ways. We’re not huge scorers, but they know how to fight and win.”

The Demons jumped out to a 16-8 lead after one quarter and used a big run in the second quarter to extend their lead to 36-17 at the half. 

The Sailors (6-4, 0-1) didn’t do themselves any favors, however. Steamboat had 18 first-half turnovers and never found any semblance of rhythm at either end of the floor. The Sailors scored consecutive baskets just once all night. 

“It’s fine to make mistakes. It’s fine to do something wrong one time or two times,” Steamboat coach John Ameen said. “But as a unit or individual, when you do it four, five, six times in a row — as a player, you have to stop that from happening. We didn’t have anyone do that. We didn’t have anyone step up and stop the bleeding.”

Glenwood’s Cassidy Gaddis led all scorers with 18 points. Delaney Gaddis added 14, and Connor Adams had 13. 

Eryn Rinck led Steamboat with 11 points off the bench. 

Glenwood plays at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Moffat County, and Steamboat plays at 5:30 p.m. at Mead.
