Steamboat high school sports preview for the week

Steamboat boys basketball

■ 7:30 p.m. Friday: Steamboat (4-6) vs. Glenwood Springs (5-3)

Steamboat struggled to find consistency in the pre-holiday part of its schedule. The Sailors will have to play well today in a battle of the Western Slope’s top two teams from last season.

Steamboat girls basketball

■ 6 p.m. Friday: Steamboat (6-3) vs. Glenwood Springs (9-0)

■ 5 p.m. Saturday: Steamboat at Mead (1-4)

After a surprising start to the season, Steamboat gets a huge test today. Glenwood is undefeated and ranked No. 8 in Class 4A. If the Sailors want to finish in the upper third of the league, a win today would be a great start.

Steamboat hockey

■ 6:30 p.m. Friday: Steamboat (3-4) vs. Pine Creek (1-8)

■ 4:45 p.m. Saturday: Steamboat at Summit (3-1)

The Steamboat hockey team needs to get on a roll now if the team wants to make the playoffs. The Sailors sit near the bottom of the Foothills Conference, and a couple of wins would go a long way in their quest for another playoff bid.

Steamboat wrestling

■ Friday and Saturday: Steamboat at Vernal, Utah Tournament of Champions

The tournament will give Steamboat and its wrestlers an idea of where the team stacks up against the best from several states. A good showing in Utah instantly adds credibility to wrestlers as they push toward regional and state meets.
