Steamboat briefs: Celebrating Sven Wiik’s 91st birthday on skis

The public is invited Sunday to a 91st birthday open house for Nordic skiing legend Sven Wiik from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Steamboat Ski Touring Center on Steamboat Boulevard.

Wiik is a member of the Colorado and national ski halls of fame and coached the U.S. Cross-Country Ski Team in the 1960 Winter Olympics at Squaw Valley, Calif. A legendary coach at Western State College, Wiik has supported many competitive athletes while encouraging citizen skiers to pursue healthy lifestyles.

CNCC offers genealogy workshop March 3 and 10

Colorado Northwestern Community College is offering a genealogy workshop for novice or experienced genealogists at the Hayden Heritage Museum from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. March 3 and 10. Register by Wednesday by calling 970-276-7291. The cost is $20.

Girl Scouts Cupcake Gala at the library on Sunday

The Girl Scouts 100th anniversary Cupcake Gala is from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Library Hall at Bud Werner Memorial Library. The event features 25 vintage Girl Scout uniforms and books in a fashion show, video clips of past Steamboat Girl Scouts, a scavenger hunt and cupcakes. Past and present Girl Scouts are invited. Those who attend are asked to bring a donation for LIFT-UP of Routt County.

Hayden Public Library is offering computer classes

Hayden Public Library is hosting a series of free computer classes through February. Instruction lasts 30 minutes with time to practice afterward. Classes are as follows: photo uploading at noon Monday, selling on the Internet at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Microsoft Excel at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday and Microsoft Word at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Classes are limited to five participants. Call the library at 970-276-3777.

Sign up for ‘Hunger Games’ challenges at the library

Represent your district in Steamboat’s “Hunger Games” on March 16 and help fight world hunger. Teams will compete for a chance to win movie tickets to “The Hunger Games.” Children and adults of all ages are welcome to participate by forming teams of six. Sign-up sheets are available at the Steamboat middle and high school libraries, Bud Werner Memorial Library and Colorado Mountain College’s Alpine Campus library. The deadline to sign up is Wednesday. Teams will be notified March 5 and given their challenges to help fight world hunger.
