Steamboat Springs — The Steamboat Springs High School girls basketball team’s season came to an end Wednesday in the first round of the Class 4A state playoffs with a 48-32 loss at Mountain View.
The ninth-seeded Sailors led early before the Mountain Lions blew the game open in the second half.
Steamboat led, 9-7, after one quarter and was up, 20-14, four minutes into the second quarter before things went cold.
“We could have had a much bigger lead,” Steamboat coach John Ameen said. “We didn’t finish around the rim, missed layups and didn’t make free throws. The momentum was in our favor in that quarter and the first four minutes of that second quarter. Then we started breaking down.”
Mountain View took a 24-22 lead into halftime and started to extend it in the second half, thanks in large part to its defense.
The Mountain Lions started getting in passing lanes and pressuring the ball, and the Sailors couldn’t respond.
Steamboat struggled offensively, scoring only 10 points in the second half.
“We can’t string four quarters together,” Ameen said. “Mentally, we start breaking down. This team we played, if they were better than us, it was not by much.”
The loss ends the careers of Sydney Bauknecht and Eryn Rinck.
“Eryn and Syd played well,” Ameen said. “I really appreciate what they’ve done the last four years.”
District 5 playoffs
With the Hayden High School basketball teams’ wins Tuesday, the District 5 basketball tournament Friday and Saturday at West Grand officially is set.
All four girls and boys teams will advance to the regional tournament. This tournament solely is for seeding.

Friday boys games
■ No. 2 Hayden vs. No. 3 West Grand, 4:30 p.m.

Saturday games
■ Girls third place, 11 a.m.
■ Boys third place, 12:30 p.m.
■ Girls championship, 2 p.m.
■ Boys championship, 3:30 p.m.
