The Steamboat Springs High School boys basketball team couldn’t overcome a slow start Tuesday, falling, 42-37, to Evergreen in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs.
Steamboat trailed, 14-8, after one quarter and was down, 23-11, at half before finally making a comeback.
“We just got off to a really, really slow start,” Steamboat coach Luke DeWolfe said. “We were flat coming out of the gates. In the end, it’s my fault not getting guys ready to play.”
The Sailors had cut the lead to 32-27 going into the fourth quarter.
Steamboat had three possessions when the team was trailing by less than three points but never could close the game.
“We really won the second half, but we couldn’t overcome that 12-point hole,” DeWolfe said. “It was just one of those games. I wish we had to do it again.”
Sophomore guard Carter Kounovsky led the Sailors with 12 points, all coming in the second half.
In his final prep game, forward Jake Miller chipped in 11.
