Steamboat Springs A key win against rival Moffat County was just what the Steamboat Springs High School boys basketball team needed to clinch a spot in the state tournament. A loss against the Bulldogs didn’t prevent the Sailors girls from getting a ticket to the dance, either.
According to playoff brackets released by the Colorado High School Activities Association on Sunday, the Sailors boys will travel to Evergreen High School for an opening-round game Tuesday. The winner goes on to play at Coronado, the second seed in the 48-team tournament’s Guy Gibbs Region.
The Sailors snuck into the postseason with a 57-49 win Friday at home against the Bulldogs. The win clinched fourth place in the Western Slope League standings for Steamboat. Sailors coach Luke DeWolfe was confident after the win that his team would earn a spot in the state tournament, but their fate wasn’t sealed until the playoff committee made it official Sunday afternoon.
The girls dropped their regular season-ending game to Moffat County on Friday, 48-35. Nonetheless, the Sailors were made a No. 9 seed in the state tournament’s Lou Piel Region. The girls play at eighth-seeded Mountain View on Wednesday. The winner will take on the region’s No. 1 seed, Pueblo West, on Friday.
The Moffat County girls, who were co-Western Slope League champions, got a No. 3 seed in the Brenda House Region and get a first-round bye. The Bulldogs will play the winner of Thompson Valley and Frederick on Friday.
