— The 10th-seeded Steamboat Springs High School boys basketball team opens the state tournament with a game at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Evergreen. The Cougars, 14-8 overall and 8-2 in the JeffCo league, finished third in a league that featured top teams D’Evelyn and Valor Christian.

However, Evergreen has lost three of its past six games, including a pair in the JeffCo league tournament. The Cougars are led by junior Andre Lane, who averages more than 14 points and seven rebounds per game.

The game likely will come down to whether Steamboat (8-14, 5-7) can limit its turnovers and make it tough for Evergreen’s offense to execute. Steamboat has won all eight of the games in which it held opponents under 50 points.

Both teams lost to Niwot and D’Eveyln, and both teams beat Conifer.

The Steamboat girls team opens its state tournament run on Wednesday.
