Steamboat cross-country skiers notch top finishes in Aspen

— Several local cross-country skiers notched top finishes during the weekend at events in Aspen.

On Saturday, in an Aspen Super Tour sprint qualifier event, Steamboat’s Haley Piske led the local contingent with a third-place finish. Lucy Newman was sixth, Madison Keeffe was eighth, Cara Piske was 12th, Dori McNeill was 13th and Mallory Richey was 18th.

On the men’s side, Charlie Von Thaden paced Steamboat with a seventh-place finish while Evan Weinman was 11th.

In the 5-kilometer women’s event, Haley Piske was fifth, Newman was sixth, Cara Piske was eighth and Keeffe was 10th.

Von Thaden was 12th in the men’s 5-kilometer, and Weinman was 13th.

In Sunday’s Owl Creek Chase in Aspen, Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club coach Josh Smullin was fourth, and Tammy Jacques was fifth.
