Steamboat Springs — Nathan Parks used to be a skier.
Now the 120-pound Steamboat Springs High School wrestler is a state qualifier.
Parks, who made it to Saturday’s semifinals, lost his first match of the day before picking up a pin in the third and fourth place match to qualify.
"It’s great,” Steamboat coach Shane Yeager said. “Nathan didn’t start wrestling until eighth grade. Nathan is definitely the hardest working kid I have. He comes every day, works hard and does everything I say.”
Parks becomes the first Steamboat wrestler to qualify for state since Casey Williams did two years ago.
Steamboat’s 220-pounder Cole Sittig just missed making state, but placed by finishing fifth. Brandon Yeager finished one spot out of placing at 182 pounds.
The state wrestling meet begins Thursday in Denver.
