Steamboat Springs Scoreboard watching typically is a habit a team will deny, but by concluding its regular season Saturday afternoon with a 72-31 shellacking of West Grand, the Hayden High School girls basketball team doesn’t have much else to distract itself with.
The Tigers exploded past the Mustangs, beating the Western Slope foe in lopsided fashion for the second time this season.
Erin Koehler had another big day. She scored 30, marking the fourth time this season she’s scored at least that many.
Brette Frentress, meanwhile, pieced together one of her best games of the season, pouring in 19, and Kelsey Rolando drained four 3-point shots for 12 points.
The Tigers will be back to Hayden for the first round of districts, starting Feb. 21, but Saturday was the final regular season home game for seniors Amber Sather, Jenn Bugg, Aubree Haskins, Frentress, Rolando and Koehler, and all managed to score.
“I was just having fun,” said Frentress, who matched a career high in points. “Everyone was playing well.”
The team returns to action Feb. 21 in the first round of the district basketball tournament, likely as a No. 3 or No. 4 seed. Exactly which it will be, and who the opponent will be won’t be determined until the rest of the district completes it schedule, so keeping an eye on scores from across the region won’t simply be an idle distraction for the Tigers.
They said it also won’t be all they’re focused on.
“We can’t let up,” Koehler said. “We always have to be getting better.”
