Occupancy appears strong for Winter Carnival weekend

— Nearly 11,000 overnight visitors will be in Steamboat Springs this weekend when the 99th Winter Carnival takes to the streets of downtown for some midwinter revelry.

The Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association’s weekly lodging barometer projects 10,700 guests will spend Saturday night in local lodging properties. That’s up from a forecast of 9,500 overnight guests on the corresponding Saturday in 2011. Accounting for last-minute reservations, 10,400 people ended up staying the night here Feb. 12, 2011.

The Chamber’s lodging barometer is an informal survey of reservations at local lodging properties. The lodging barometer is intended to help Steamboat businesses gauge their staffing needs during the winter and summer tourism seasons.

In addition to Saturday bookings, the barometer also tracks Wednesday lodging reservations. On Feb. 15, 5,900 guests are expected to stay here. That’s down from a forecast of 6,300 guests on the corresponding Wednesday in 2011.

However, bookings appear to be very strong for the Presidents Day weekend of Feb. 18 to 20. Early indications are for 13,200 overnight guests Feb. 18. That’s up from a forecast of 11,200 guests on the corresponding Saturday in 2011.
