Steamboat schools receive Lowe’s grant funding

— Two new grants will allow the Steamboat Springs School District to create an outdoor classroom for its middle school students and open a scene shop for its high school theater program.

Karla Setter, the school district’s grant writer, announced last week that the schools will receive $9,000 from the Lowe’s Toolbox for Education national grant program.

According to the home improvement store’s website, the 6-year-old program has donated nearly $25 million to more than 5,000 schools in the U.S.

Marty Lamansky, Steamboat’s curriculum director, said the grants are an exciting new source of funding.

“We’re excited to have these grants to improve these facilities,” he said.

He said the $4,000 scene shop grant will fund a prebuilt wood shed that will arrive sometime in the spring and will be installed outside the high school. Engineering students will design and finish the interior of the addition. Lamansky said the shed will give the theater department more room to create sets for school performances.

“Right now, all of our sets are built and stored on the stage, so we have very limited space,” he said. “This project will allow us to build them in a new space.”

The $5,000 outdoor classroom grant will fund benches, native plants and landscaping in the middle school’s courtyard, according to the grant application. The space then could be used by science classes, as well as fine arts students who want to draw landscapes based on scenery outside the school’s courtyard.
