Slope-style skiers shine at Winter Park event

— Local skiers recorded a series of top results during a Rocky Mountain Series United States of America Snowboard Association slope-style event Saturday at Winter Park.

Andy Schuiling was second in the boys 9 and younger category. Kai Doyle was second, Sammy Schuiling was third, Payton McElhiney was fourth and Colton Creamer was sixth in the boys ages 10 to 12 division.

“That was their first event together, and they’re all skiing really well,” Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club coach Tony Lodico said about the boys ages 10 to 12 group. “That’s the next generation, and it will be really exciting to see them come along together.”

Nick Simon was eighth, Jesse James Pugh was 10th, John Satterfield was 14th, Jake Sear was 15th, Robby Brown was 16th and Griffin Sides was 18th in the boys ages 13 to 15 division. Logan Banning helped lead the way with a third-place finish in the boys ages 16 to 18 class, ahead of sixth-place Pelle Seiler. Gracy Whelihan was second in the women’s ages 16 to 18 division, and Lennon Vaughn finished fourth in the men’s open skier class.

“Everyone skied really pretty well,” Lodico said. “Our guys are starting to put down some of their new first runs. We put down a bunch of our tricks, and now, we’re watching the kids put more stylish twists on everything to make those tricks their own.”
