99th Winter Carnival schedule

THURSDAY

■ Cross-country obstacle race — Howelsen Hill, 4:30 p.m.

Obstacle race for cross-country skiers ages 5 to 12. FREE with a Winter Carnival button. 845 Howelsen Parkway.

■ Telemark dual challenge — Howelsen Hill, 5 to 6 p.m.



Registration is from 4 to 4:30 p.m. in the fireplace room at Howelsen Hill Lodge with inspection from 4:30 to 5 p.m. FREE with a Winter Carnival button. 845 Howelsen Parkway.

■ 20-, 30- and 50-meter jumping — Howelsen Hill, 6 to 7 p.m.



Skiers 11 and older. Alpine, Telemark or jumping skis only. Register from 5 to 5:45 p.m. the night of the event in the fireplace room at Howelsen Hill Lodge. FREE with a Winter Carnival button. 845 Howelsen Parkway.

FRIDAY

■ Soda Pop Slalom — Stampede run at Steamboat Ski Area, 10 a.m.

Open to any skier or snowboarder through fifth grade who is not an age-class racer with the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club. The preregistration deadline has passed. FREE with a Winter Carnival button.

■ Bumps, jumps and K18 ski jumping — Howelsen Hill, 1:30 to 3 p.m.

Children ages 4 to 11. Preregistration is required at the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club office by noon today. Check in from 12:30 to 1:15 p.m. on event day.

■ Tubing party — Howelsen Hill, 4 to 6:30 p.m.

Tubes are provided. Waiver must be signed.

■ Nordic Jumping Jamboree — Howelsen Hill, 4:30 to 6 p.m.

Nordic combined athletes jump the 75, 42, 28 and 20 hills. FREE with a Winter Carnival button. 845 Howelsen Parkway.

■ Dual slalom bicycle race — Howelsen Hill, 6 to 8 p.m.

Register from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. the night of the event in the fireplace room at Howelsen Hill Lodge. Practice is from 5 to 6 p.m. 970-870-1974 or 970-879-0695, ext. 100.

■ Snowboarding jam session — Howelsen Hill, 7 to 8 p.m.

SATURDAY

■ Knights of Columbus pancake breakfast — Holy Name Catholic Church, 8 to 11 a.m.

In addition to a Winter Carnival button, donations are encouraged.

■ 100-meter Nordic sprint — downtown Steamboat Springs, 8 a.m.

The Steamboat Springs Nordic Council hosts a 100-meter Nordic sprint on Lincoln Avenue between Seventh and Eighth streets. Register at the Ski Touring Center or the Steamboat Springs visitor center. FREE with a Winter Carnival button.

■ Street events — downtown Steamboat Springs, 9 a.m. to noon

Children on skis and snowboards are pulled behind horses through the snow-covered streets of downtown. Races include street slalom, skijoring, ring and spear, donkey jump and the adult shovel race. ■ Pro Alpine ski flying training — Howelsen Hill, 9 a.m. to noon

■ International Muzzle Loading Biathlon — Howelsen Hill, noon to 2 p.m.

Participants clad in fur trapper and frontier vintage attire combine marksmanship, using early-Americana black powder firearms, and cross-country skiing on primitive equipment. FREE with a Winter Carnival button. 845 Howelsen Parkway.

■ Pro Alpine ski flying qualifying — Howelsen Hill, 1 p.m.

■ Athlete exhibition — Howelsen Hill, 6:15 to 6:45 p.m.

Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club athletes demonstrate the variety of disciplines they compete in, from Nordic skiing to flying through the air on snowboards. FREE with a Winter Carnival button. 845 Howelsen Parkway.

■ Night Extravaganza — Howelsen Hill, 7 p.m.

The evening features the Lighted Man, glow necklaces and torchlight parades, fiery hoop jumpers, an elaborate fireworks display and more. FREE with a Winter Carnival button. 845 Howelsen Parkway.

SUNDAY

■ Street events — downtown Steamboat Springs, 9 to 11 a.m.

■ Diamond Hitch Parade — downtown Steamboat Springs, 11:30 a.m.

The diamond hitch consists of at least four skiers holding on to points of a rope tied in the shape of one or more diamonds. Animals, people or vehicles may pull the skiers down the snow-filled streets. FREE with a Winter Carnival button.

■ Pro Alpine ski flying finals — Howelsen Hill, 1 p.m.

Participants launch off the K114 on Alpine skis and boots rather than the usual ski jumping equipment. 970-879-8141.

■ Parent-child downhill — Howelsen Hill, 1 to 2 p.m.

An adult and child ski together. FREE with a Winter Carnival button. 845 Howelsen Parkway.
