Steamboat man suspected of distributing child porn

— Routt County Sheriff’s Office deputies served an arrest warrant Tuesday afternoon for a 20-year-old Steamboat Springs man suspected of distributing child porn.

Few details were available Tuesday about the suspected crimes. A judge has sealed an affidavit typically filed by law enforcement officers that outlines the reasons for issuing an arrest warrant.

The Steamboat Pilot & Today does not typically identify those accused of sex crimes until they have been convicted.

According to a press release from Undersheriff Ray Birch, the arrest was related to an Oct. 29 raid of an Herbage Townhomes unit in the 1900 block of Après Ski Way. The Sheriff’s Office was conducting an investigation with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement investigators.

According to the arrest warrant, the crimes were committed in Routt County on or about May 6, Aug. 25 to 27 and Oct. 1 to 22. The warrant lists two counts of exploitation of a child. One is a Class 4 felony, and the other is a Class 3 felony.

According to the Colorado Revised Statutes, a Class 3 felony is committed when a person “possesses with the intent to deal in, sell, or distribute, including but not limited to distributing through digital or electronic means, any sexually exploitative material.”

A Class 4 felony is committed when a person “possesses or controls any sexually exploitative material for any purpose.”

No court appearance had been set for the suspect.
