Steamboat briefs: Republican caucuses are scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday

— Routt County’s precinct caucuses begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday at locations throughout the county. The caucuses are open to voters who registered as Republicans by Dec. 7. Participants also must be residents of their precincts as of Jan. 9. Registration at each precinct caucus location begins at 6:30 p.m. Following is a list of caucus precinct locations. Winter Carnival horse events registration open

Registration for the Winter Carnival horse events will be online this year at www.steamboatchamber.com. Registration for non-horse events like the shovel race will be taken the day of the event at the Chamber’s registration tent in downtown Steamboat. Call Maren at 970-457-4529. The 99th annual Winter Carnival is Wednesday to Sunday.

Heartsaver CPR, first aid class planned for Saturday

Yampa Valley Medical Center holds a Heartsaver CPR and first aid class from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in Conference Room 1. This class is for the nonclinical person who needs to be certified in adult/infant/child CPR, AED and first aid. Registration is required by noon Friday by calling 970-871-2500.

Food bank in Hayden will distribute food as needed

The Hayden Community Food Bank and outreach ministry of Hayden Congregational Church will distribute food on an as-needed basis. Call Theresa Stivers at 970-276-2507.

Compost program open to residents in Steamboat

The program is open to residential areas within Steamboat Springs city limits. Participants will receive a 5-gallon bucket that can be collected weekly, semimonthly or monthly at a cost of $8 per bucket. Items accepted include soiled napkins and food waste including meat, bones, dairy, fruits, vegetables and more. Registration is open for Steamboat Marathon

Registration is open for the 31st annual Steamboat Marathon. The half-marathon and marathon races are June 3. There also is a 10-kilometer race and a half-mile Honey Stinger Fun Run.

The marathon is capped at 500 participants, and the half-marathon is capped at 1,200. The 10-kilometer race doesn’t have a cap, and the fun run is capped at 200.

Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association Public Relations Manager Michelle Krasilinec said registration is on pace with last year. She said the Chamber expects more entrants this year after Colorado Runner magazine named Steamboat Marathon the “Best Weekend Getaway” in 2011.

Through May 2, the cost is $70 for the marathon, $55 for the half-marathon and $35 for the 10-kilometer race.

To register, visit www.steamboatmarathon.com, or visit www.active.com and enter Steamboat Marathon. Runners also can register in person at the Steamboat Springs visitor center, 125 Anglers Drive. Routt County residents will receive $10 off the race registration if signing up in person.

VNA offers birth control, screenings for women

The Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association’s Women’s Health Clinic is offering low cost birth control, STD screenings, pap smears, breast exams and general women’s health care based on income. Nonprofit appliance store is expanding hours, space

ReStore, Routt County Habitat for Humanity’s nonprofit appliance store, is expanding its hours and space at 718 Oak St. ReStore is open from 10 a.m. to noon Mondays through Fridays, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays and closed Sundays. Horizons seeks mentors for its clients with disabilities

Horizons Specialized Services is seeking volunteers to serve as mentors to individuals with developmental disabilities in Moffat and Routt counties. Volunteers spend at least three hours per month with Horizons clients. Activities can include hiking, biking, bowling, swimming, fishing, walks, etc. The group needs volunteers for swimming and boating programs. Local groups reach out to returning service members

The Routt County Veterans Affairs, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4264 and American Legion Post 44 in Steamboat would like to meet and greet local sons and daughters returning from military service. The VFW is looking for female war veterans. The American Legion also is looking for new members.
