— Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club athletes dominated the podium Saturday during a Nordic combined Rocky Mountain Division Junior National qualifier at Howelsen Hill in Steamboat Springs.

“It was a fun weekend. Kids rose to the occasion,” Winter Sports Club Nordic Director Todd Wilson said. “I’m just really proud of their efforts. The kids put their best foot forward.”

Local athletes grabbed five of the six first-place finishes in the event.

Adam Loomis took top honors in the J1 men’s category, turning a second-place jump into a win, by 35 seconds, thanks to day’s fastest cross-country ski time. Michael Ward, third in the jump, was second and Ben Berend, the top jumper, was third overall.

Aleck Gantick finished fourth, Erik Lynch was fifth and Cliff Field was sixth.

“Ben and Aleck really stood out,” Wilson said. “For those guys to work their way in there, that’s great. They had a great day.”

Natalie Bohlmann won the J2 girls division, leading the cross-country race wire-to-wire. Dominique Katthain was second and Melissa Requist was third.

Colton Kissel won the J2 boys division, ahead of Jasper Good and Nicholas Madden. Koby Vargas, competing up a division, was fourth after nailing the best jump of the class.

“That was pretty cool to see,” Wilson said about Vargas.

Kathleen O’Connell recorded the top jump and top skiing time to win at the J3 girls levels. Esther DelliQuadri was second and Sophia Nester was third.

Wyatt Gebhardt had the second best jump and second best ski time, but it was enough for him to win the J3 boys division by a comfortable 31 seconds. Noel Keeffe was second with the third best jump and Davis Petersen, in his first year as a J3 athlete was third after logging the best jump.

“He was another one with an outstanding performance,” Wilson said. “He was sixth in special jumping competing up a class in J2. That’s just outstanding for a first-year J3.”

Maggie Morton won at the J4 level, rallying after finishing third in the jump to win the race by 27 seconds. Waverly Gebhardt was second and Mae Thorp was third.

Elijah Vargas won among the J4 boys, logging the fastest cross-country ski time to

hold off Decker Dean and Brenden Andrews.

The regional team for the Junior Nationals will be announced at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Howelsen Hill.
