Steamboat girls basketball downs Eagle Valley

— The Steamboat Springs High School girls basketball team was solid Friday on offense in a win at Battle Mountain.

What better way to get back on track than get out and run.

The Sailors went up and down the court on Saturday, literally running away with a 56-26 win against Eagle Valley.

“Our transition (offense) was really good,” Steamboat coach John Ameen said.

Steamboat jumped out to a 13-6 first quarter lead against an Eagle Valley team that started two freshmen and three sophomores.

The Sailors had extended the lead to 30-11 by halftime and 43-17 heading into the fourth quarter.

Steamboat’s defense caused 28 Eagle Valley turnovers, many of which were thrown down to a streaking Sailors player for a layup.

Nikki Fry again led the Sailors with 17 points. Maggie Crouch added 11 off the bench, and Alex Feeley had 10.

Steamboat (11-8, 5-4) still has an opportunity at the playoffs.

“We want to win and need to win,” Ameen said. “We have to start playing our best basketball. The state playoffs are a realistic goal for us.”
