On Saturday, apparently. Hayden went to district leading Paonia and fell 83-65.
“The score does not reflect how well our kids played,” Tigers coach Michelle Wilkie said. “They played phenomenal.”
Hayden just ran into what might be Class 2A’s best team.
Paonia, 13-1, led 18-15 after one quarter and took a 41-33 lead into halftime.
Hayden, 10-5, battle back in the third quarter, but Paonia hit five 3-pointers and the Tigers never could quite close the gap.
Erin Koehler led the Tigers with 29 points. Brette Frentress had 15 and Aubree Haskins had 11.
“You can look at it as a blowout, but we didn’t,” Wilkie said. “They were in great spirits.”
The team next plays at 7 p.m. Friday at Soroco.
