Hayden boys bounce back, win against Paonia

A night after struggling with the other team making runs, the Hayden High School boys basketball team led wire to wire Saturday, downing Paonia, 75-67.

“They kept making runs at us in the second half, but we turned them away,” Hayden coach Mike Luppes said.

The Tigers, now 10-6, jumped out to a 23-16 lead in the first quarter and led 37-30 at halftime. Paonia never was able to get closer than four points in the second half.

Paul Laliberte led the Tigers with 31 points including seven 3-pointers. Jorge Valdez scored 16 and grabbed 11 rebounds. Mark Doolin had 14 points, eight rebounds and hit four free throws in the last minute to ice the game.

“We had some good looks at the basket,” Luppes said. “We made better decisions. It was the big improvement that we needed over” Friday.

The team next plays at 8:30 p.m. Friday at Soroco.
