— Steamboat Springs Nordic combined skier Bryan Fletcher led the United States on Friday in a World Cup event in Val Di Fiemme, Italy. Fletcher finished 14th after jumping to 10th.

Billy Demong finished 18th, and Steamboat’s Johnny Spillane was 22nd.

The race was part of a new format for Nordic combined. In the penalty race format, athletes are given a number of penalty laps from zero to four to be completed during the cross-country portion of the race.

Jumps are based only on distance in the penalty race format.

Fletcher, for example, jumped to 10th but incurred one penalty lap. Demong and Spillane each incurred two penalty laps.

Steamboat’s Taylor Fletcher, who finished first and third in Continental Cup events in Kingenthal, Germany, didn’t make Friday’s World Cup event cut after the provisional round.

Action continues Saturday with the team sprint event.
