Steamboat Springs Despite struggling on offense, the Steamboat Springs High School girls basketball team downed Battle Mountain, 42-28, on Friday.
Steamboat, now 10-8 overall and 4-4 in the Western Slope League, jumped out to an early 12-2 lead and never really was challenged.
The Sailors struggled on offense all night, however, forcing quick shots.
“We don’t settle down offensively really for most of the game,” Steamboat coach John Ameen said. “It was just that spurt at the beginning of the game.”
Steamboat was able to use its defense to get quick baskets and put the game away for good with a big run to begin the third quarter.
Eryn Rinck led the Sailors with 17 points, including five 3-pointers. Nikki Fry added 13.
Steamboat now looks to go 2-0 on the weekend when the team welcomes Eagle Valley for a 2 p.m. game Saturday.
“The effort was there and we created turnovers and quick shots,” Ameen said. “That was the positive and kept us in the game.”
