Steamboat Springs — Friday night’s game between the Hayden and Plateau Valley boys basketball teams was one of streaks. The Cowboys had the first streak, the last and too many in the middle, however, ending Hayden’s six-game winning streak, 79-66.
“We just did not have the defensive intensity we needed tonight,” Hayden coach Mike Luppes said.
Plateau Valley’s Teddy Grundy entered the game widely acknowledged as one of the league’s top players and despite first-half foul trouble, he proved why his name precedes him, pouring in 25 points. He sank seemless 10-foot pull-ups in the lane, won races to the hoop for layups and shot well, 9-12, from the free-throw line.
“He’s pretty automatic,” Luppes said.
The win was as much on Grundy’s teammates, however.
Brett Hawkins scored 18, Kyler Smith had 13 and Doug Eberhard had 12. One Cowboy in double figures is sustainable. Four is game-deciding.
Hayden was led by Paul Laliberte, who finished with 22 points. Jorge Valdez had 14 to go along with 16 rebounds. Mark Doolin added 10 points and Aaron Cramer had eight.
Down double digits early, Hayden was within four in the third quarter after a Doolin put-back and seven after a Hunter Johnston 3-point shot in the fourth. It couldn’t draw even and eventually slipped behind.
The team, 9-6, plays Saturday at Paonia.
“That will be a big gut check for us,” Luppes said.
