— Several members of the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club snowboard team picked up podium finishes during the weekend at a USASA event in Breckenridge.

Eleven Steamboat riders competed, and 10 of them battled through tough conditions to make a podium.

“The pipe was hard and icy,” Steamboat coach Luke Kessler wrote in an email, “while the transition was full of freshly drifted snow. All the while the wind was gusting hard enough to bend the flags on the side of the pipe fully in half.”

Nik Baden, Kirby Kelly Savanna Atkins, Teddy Kanner, Kelsey Madrow and Kevin Keough all placed first. Cody Winters, Max Jensen and Carter Smalley were second, and Maverick Shaw was third.

The weather improved drastically for Sunday’s slope-style event. The course consisted of two jumps, two rails, two more jumps and two more rails.

Baden, Winters and Kanner all placed first in their respective divisions. Keough and Spencer Vaughan were second while Samalie was third.

Winters and Baden had what were perhaps the most impressive runs.

Winters did a frontside 360 indy into a backside 360 tail grab and followed with two grabs over the biggest jumps in the line. Baden’s fluid and concise style landed him in first place along with the best trick award for the day. Baden’s run consisted of a switch backside 540, a backside rodeo 540, a frontside 720 and a backside 720.
