Steamboat Springs An old friend to the biking community is returning for the 2012 season.
The Mountain States Cup Rocky Mountain Regional Championship Series will return to Steamboat Springs this summer for the first time since 2004.
The series, which features Endurance, Gravity and Super D racing, will hold events in Steamboat on July 20, 21 and 22.
“We’re excited to have a new venue,” Mountain States Cup Director Keith Darner said. “Riders are excited to come to Steamboat to see a new Downhill, Super D and cross-country course.”
Darner said the event was able to come back to Steamboat after Steamboat Ski Area and the U.S. Forest Service committed to building downhill trails at the ski area.
Courses for the event, called the Storm Peak Stampede, haven’t been determined but likely will be finalized in the coming months.
There will be three different races, including a endurance race, a downhill race and a Super D competition.
“We were able to come back because all of the new trails on the Steamboat Ski Area are gravity oriented,” Darner said. “Our series has gravity races and endurance races. Now, with the new trails, we can come there. Plus, we had several local guys from Steamboat in our series asking to bring this series there.”
Steamboat joins Salida, Crested Butte, Telluride and Angel Fire, N.M., as stops on the tour.
To register, visit www.racemsc.com. The online registration deadline is July 18. Cyclists also can register the day of the race.
The series begins May 18 in Salida and continues June 8 in Angel Fire, June 22 in Crested Butte and July 20 in Steamboat. The series concludes Aug. 10 in Telluride.
Young Steamboat riders Jeffrey Gay, Evan Weinman and Alec Schaffer all did well in the series last year. Steamboat pro Brad Bingham finished 10th while Kelly Boniface was 12th.
“We would like it to be a recurring thing,” Darner said about the Steamboat stop.
