— It’s been a long time coming for Sophia Schwartz.

The Steamboat Springs Winter Club member blew out her knee in 2011 for the second time. But on Saturday, Schwartz exhibited what she can do when healthy.

She won the U.S. Freestyle Selections dual moguls event at Copper Mountain, kicking off her trek on the NorAm tour with a bang.

“She’s skiing really well,” Winter Sports Club moguls coach Rob Day said. “She’ll be deadly this winter. Lane (Stoltzner) will, too. They’re lighting it up. Lane wasn’t far away from getting World Cup starts. She was almost there.”

Stoltzner, who had a third-place finish Friday in a single moguls event, finished fifth Saturday.

Michael DeGrandis led the way for the Steamboat boys Saturday, finishing sixth. He was eighth Friday.

But the story out of Copper Mountain was Schwartz and Stoltzner. The two are off for the holidays before returning in the new year to compete on the NorAm tour.

“The two of them are going to have one hell of a winter,” Day said.
