— The Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club freestyle moguls team had an up and down day Wednesday in Copper Mountain on the first day of the U.S. Selections event.

Lane Stoltzner was Steamboat’s top finisher, coming in fifth on the girls side. Sophia Schwartz, who was battling the flu, was 10th, Avital Shimko was 14th, and Jaelin Kauf was 23rd.

On the men’s side, Michael DeGrandis, coming in ninth, was the lone Steamboat skier to make the finals. Ryan Dyer was 18th, George DeGrandis was 37th, Brad Hoefer was 43rd, and Evan Smith was 55th.

“It was cold, but it was a good day,” Winter Sports Club coach Rob Day said. “All the kids skied well.”

The event continues Friday with a single moguls event. Two men and two women from the U.S. Selections events will earn World Cup starts at the end of the season in Lake Placid, N.Y., and Deer Valley, Utah.
