Steamboat Springs School District receives first letter of interest for open board seat

Steamboat Springs — The Steamboat Springs School District has its first candidate to fill the vacant seat on its school board.
Sam Jones, a financial adviser and founder of the Steamboat Springs Challenge Fund, submitted a letter of interest to the board on Tuesday.
“I care very much about the quality of Steamboat's schools not only for the obvious benefit to our students and children but also as an economic anchor in our community,” Jones wrote in the letter.
Last year, Jones and a group of local parents launched the Challenge Fund, which has raised more than $53,000 for the district's two elementary schools.
Proceeds from the fund are being used to support new curriculum and technology tools in the schools.
The school district will continue accepting applications for the open District 2 seat through Jan. 7, and then interview candidates in public no later than Jan. 16.
District 2 covers all of the school district's southern boundary and a small section within city limits. With the exception of Tree Haus, residents who vote in precincts 18, 7 and 6 live in the district.
Applicants can call the district office at 970-879-1530 with questions about applying for the position or to determine whether they reside within District 2.
