Steamboat Springs The best story of the pre-holiday season is happening in Oak Creek.
With a 64-48 win against Beth Eden on Saturday, the Soroco High School girls basketball team improved to 5-1 on the season, including five straight wins.
Not bad for a team that lost 67 percent of its scoring from last year.
“We’re playing hard and playing within the system,” Rams coach David Bruner said. “A lot of our games have been close at half. But it’s conditioning that’s really paid off, and they’ve bought into what we’re doing.”
Soroco faced the odds Saturday.
Beth Eden shot 40 free throws to Soroco’s 13. Still, the Rams were able to extend a 25-21 halftime lead in the second half and run away with the game in the fourth quarter.
“We played through some adversity,” Bruner said.
Jessica Rossi led the Rams with 18 points. Hayley Johnson had 15, Shelby Meyer had 12, and Jacey Schlegel had 11.
Soroco next plays at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday against Vail Christian at home.
“It’s their effort,” Bruner said. “They’re playing harder than any other team I’ve had.”
