Steamboat Springs Maybe annual battles with Wyoming's Little Snake River High School taint the sample, but the Hayden High School boys basketball team is well aware of what small schools in Wyoming are capable of.
The Rattlers have won multiple state championships in recent seasons and frequently best their cross-border rivals, Hayden.
That’s one reason the Tigers are wary of a trip to Baggs, Wyo., to play Little Snake River on Saturday, and it’s one reason why Hayden felt good Friday after knocking off Encampment, Wyo., 62-47.
It wasn’t easy.
“We ran into a good team, and it was a pretty good game,” Hayden coach Mike Luppes said.
The Tigers trailed early, 15-12, but took control in the second quarter, then played much better in the third to build some cushion. Luppes said Encampment did a good job of working the ball into the paint.
Jorge Valdez had 18 points and six rebounds for the Tigers. Mark Doolin scored 14 and had 13 boards. Paul Laliberte scored 15, and Isaac Bridges, Dan Engle and Greg Frentress all had four.
