9 a.m. Saturday: Soroco Invitational

In past years, it’s been tough on local schools to compete near or close to home. That won’t be the case this year. Saturday’s Soroco Invitational will bring all three Routt County schools to Oak Creek. It’s the first of four events in Routt County this winter. Each of the three teams opened last weekend in Middle Park.

Steamboat heavyweight Cole Sittig was the top Routt County finisher, registering a second-place finish. Steamboat also had a trio of third-place finishes.

Soroco got a third place finish from Garrett McCuller, and Kent Miller paced Hayden with a third-place finish.

The tournament will continue to serve as an early-season refresher with a large contingent of wrestlers still dropping weight.

It’s the first look for Routt County wrestling fans. Luckily, it’s not the last.

Thursday through Saturday: Soroco (0-1) at Meeker Cowboy Shootout

Soroco opened the season with a loss to cross-county rival Hayden. Things don’t get much easier with the Meeker Cowboy Shootout. Soroco opens against Class 3A Moffat County on Thursday, and initial reports are the Bulldogs are scrappy, talented and really physical. Soroco will need to have a big performance from senior guard Nic Paxton to do well, with junior forward Ryan Jeep nursing an injury.

6:30 p.m. Friday: Soroco (2-1) vs. Longmont Christian (0-2)

The young Rams weathered the storm last week at the Meeker Cowboy Shootout, finishing 2-1. Soroco doesn’t boast many returners, but they fit well into coach David Bruner’s system. Bruner likes his players to get up and down the court. He said his goal each game is to get 60 to 80 shots. He also thinks that if his team can score 50 points, it will have a chance to win. Longmont comes in winless, having scored just 24 and 25 points in two defeats.
