Steamboat Springs After a slow start Saturday, the Steamboat Springs High School girls basketball team easily defeated Basalt, 50-31.
The Sailors (2-0) broke open the game in the second quarter.
“We started really, really slow in the first quarter,” coach John Ameen said. “We were just not mentally there. It wasn’t about shot making or anything like that. We were just not mentally checked into what we needed to do. It showed on both ends of the floor.”
Steamboat quickly turned an 8-8 tie after the first quarter into a 24-10 halftime lead thanks to a solid transition game.
The Sailors, who were without several starters, continued to extend its lead in the second half.
McKenzie Repollo had a game-high 21 points. Maggie Crouch added 11.
“We’re in a good spot now but we can be in a great spot if we keep improving,” Ameen said.
Steamboat next plays Thursday in the Steamboat Shootout.
