Steamboat Springs The Steamboat Springs High School girls volleyball team opened the 2012 season with a pair of wins Friday at the Glenwood Springs Tournament.
Steamboat beat Rangely in three and West Grand in two. During preseason tournaments, teams play the best of three. Steamboat beat Rangely, 25-15, 21-25 and 15-12. It then cruised against West Grand, 25-21 and 25-15.
“I think it’s common, especially with an inexperienced team, to see a lack of consistency,” Steamboat coach Wendy Hall said. “The hope is they get better at it with each game.”
Hall said that in each match she saw things she liked and things she didn’t. Often, she said, Steamboat would get big leads before letting the other team back into it.
“I’m seeing some things that are good, too,” she said. “We have to learn from some of the things that we didn’t look too good at and build off the things we did well.”
Steamboat plays at 12:30 p.m. Saturday against Grand Junction. The team also will play another match in the afternoon after the brackets are crossed.
