— With Denverites still withering in the heat and the campfire ban lifted in Routt National Forest, Steamboat is set up for busier Labor Day weekend tourism than it saw in 2011.

The high temperature in Denver on Sunday is forecast to reach 97 degrees while the National Weather Service is expecting daily highs in the mid-80s throughout the weekend here for events like the Wild West Air Fest, Steamboat Stage Race and Rocky Mountain Bull Bash.

The lodging barometer released Wednesday by the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association anticipates 9,100 visitors will spend the night here Saturday. That compares with the 2011 forecast that called for 7,900 visitors with 9,600 actually coming to town.

If that same bounce is realized this weekend, Steamboat could be up 21 percent to 11,000 visitors Saturday. Last weekend on Aug. 25, without any major tourism related events, Steamboat’s visitation grew by 1,300 late arrivals.

The gap in bookings for this weekend is in mountain condominiums, which are expected to be at least 40 percent full. Other types of lodging properties are apt to be more than 90 percent full by the time the weekend comes around, according to the barometer. U.S. Highway 40 motels already were 90 percent full at the time the barometer was released, with mountain hotels at 87 percent and downtown lodging properties at 82 percent. Overall, the forecast is for 61 percent of available beds to be occupied.
