Steamboat Springs Firefighters on Tuesday were tending to hot spots at a 7-acre wildfire near the northern edge of the Mount Zirkel Wilderness Area north of Steamboat Springs.
“They’re not calling it fully contained, but they’re really close,” Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest spokesman Aaron Voos said Tuesday.
The lightning-caused fire was reported Saturday night along the west fork of the Encampment River northwest of Black Mountain. The fire is in the northwest corner of Jackson County but is in the Routt National Forest.
Voos said two helicopters helped fight the fire. The Forest Service had to get special permission to use the helicopters in the wilderness area.
