Steamboat Springs Betsy Frick said it was a shout from the Durango coach that told much of the tale Saturday.
“They had 23 players there, and she yelled to her players on the field, ‘Anyone that’s not 100 percent, let me know and we’ll sub you out!’” Frick said. “I wanted to yell to my girls, ‘Anyone that’s not 100 percent, you have to hang in there. We can’t sub!’”
Missing a handful of key players to spring break vacations, the Steamboat girls lacrosse team had only 12 players, and it paid the price. Durango buried the Sailors in the second half, blowing open a 3-1 game with five goals, sinking Steamboat, 8-1.
“We played much better than we had (Friday). We adapted and learned how to deal with some of their better players, and we shut them down somewhat,” Frick said. “But she still had trouble with transitions and with putting an attack together.”
Sara Pugh notched 12 saves for Steamboat, and Nastassija Voyich scored the team’s only goal.
The squad, 0-12, returns to action May 3 at Eagle Valley.
“We will work really hard to try to make that a close,” Frick said.
