Steamboat Springs It always seems to happen with spring break: Players leave early and teams struggle to compete in the final games before the break.
But not for the Steamboat Springs High School girls tennis team.
Despite being down multiple players and having to shift teams around, the Sailors placed all three singles players and two doubles teams in the finals of Saturday’s Longmont tournament.
Christi Valicenti, at No. 1 singles, Rachel Grubbs, at No. 2 singles, and Ellie Bender, at No. 3 singles, advanced to the finals.
Summer Smalley and Brooke Metzler, at No. 2 doubles, and Katie Ross and Katie Spencer, at No. 3 doubles, also advanced to the finals.
The No. 1 doubles team of Allie Lowerie and Ali Diehl made it to the third-place match, and the No. 4 doubles team of Lexie Baden and Hanna Haggarty went 1-2.
“I was really, really pleased with the quality of play even though they didn’t have normal partners,” Steamboat coach John Aragon said. “This has been a great team in supporting each other.”
Steamboat should have a chance to win the tournament but will have several forfeits.
Bender and the No. 1 doubles team are leaving for spring break.
“It’s been a good test for us,” Aragon said. “There have been solid players in this tournament. It’s been good for the girls and our program.”
Action resumes at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.
