Bill and Kathy McKinley: No laughing matter

A hunting season on greater sandhill cranes? Really? We were hoping it was April 1, and this was a joke. That someone would even suggest the possibility is incredulous. Waking up in the morning to the sound of sandhill cranes in the fields is one of the greater experiences of living in this area. And if you are out and about and have a chance to sit and watch them, you are truly lucky. Just seeing them in the fields as you drive by makes you think you are seeing something prehistoric.

We find the thought of someone wanting to walk up to a sandhill crane and shoot it utterly disgusting. You bet we are emotional about this. So what if the population now is healthy enough to kill a few without harming the population? That’s reason enough to do it? You people are sick.

I'm not a hunter. Too much work. However, sandhill cranes are occasional visitors to my property. If a crane season is approved, anyone with a license is welcome to fill it on my acreage.
