Steamboat Springs The mountain bike racing season kicked off this past weekend with a fast and technical course in Fruita that saw racers from across Colorado doing battle in dusty and wind-swept conditions.
Two Steamboat Velo riders, Alex Pond and Corey Piscopo, competed against racers from across Colorado. Pond started the 32-mile professional category race lined up against a number of nationally ranked racers and finished 13th. Despite the warm conditions in Steamboat, Pond had only a few chances to get out on his bike ahead of the event but is coming off a stellar 2011 season that saw him rise from Category 2 to pro.
Piscopo finished third in the Category 1 race, also doing the 32-mile course. The first lap saw three racers, including Piscopo, move out in front to form a solid gap, but rusty technical skills cost Piscopo the win on a section of trail known as Chutes and Ladders.
With racing in full swing, Steamboat Velo will hold a season kickoff party from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Backcountry Provisions. Riders of all abilities and ages with an interest in bike racing are encouraged to attend to learn more about Steamboat Velo. Current members will be on hand to sign up for 2012 and look at the upcoming race schedule for May.
