Steamboat senior runs to twin victories

Steamboat Springs — Steamboat Springs High School track coach Greg Long said Asher Rohde has never been one for a sprint.
“He always believed that to win races he would have to have a big lead and hang on and hope the those with speed would be too far back to catch him,” Long said.
Rohde proved Saturday that he has evolved as a runner, flying to victory with a late-race surge in the 1,600-meter run at the Demon Invitational in Glenwood Springs.
Rohde sprinted to the finish, pulling ahead with 30 meters remaining for the highlight of what was a great day for the Steamboat senior. He followed that up with a comfortable win in the 3,200.
He finished in 4 minutes, 46.29 seconds in the 1,600 and in 10:32.76 in the 3,200.
“He has really learned to finish a race,” Long said. “He used his kick, which is a newfound tool for Asher.
“That’s a tough double, winning the 1,600 and 3,200 in the same day.”
Rohde was joined in scoring points for the Sailors by Colton Lewer, who was third in the 800 in 2:10.67. Kodie Hoyt was sixth in the discus with a toss of 115 feet, 4 inches and seventh in the shot with a throw of 40 feet, 10-1/2 inches.
