— It would be tough for it not to be fresh in Nikki Fry’s mind.

The Steamboat Springs High School junior girls lacrosse player easily can remember last weekend.

Add a stinging defeat to Battle Mountain to the equation, and the memory is even more vivid.

So after Fry and her Steamboat teammates walked off Gardner Field on Wednesday fresh off a 13-4 defeat to Aspen — in a game that was closer than the score appeared — talk wasn’t about the loss, but rather the opportunity ahead.

“It’s fresh,” Fry said about a 7-6 loss Saturday to Battle Mountain, in a game where she a had a chance in the final 0.3 seconds to tie. “We want that game.”

The added confidence comes, however, from playing tough against Aspen on Wednesday.

The Skiers are the top team in the conference, having easily coasted through their schedule to this point.

Steamboat actually led, 1-0, early on an Aleigh Aurin goal. Aspen scored twice before Hannah Hartley’s goal early in the first, tying the game at 2.

Aspen’s Shannon Turbidy scored a pair of goals to put the Skiers up, 4-2, before Fry scored to cut it to 4-3.

But that’s when Aspen took over. The Skiers scored five more goals in the first half before Fry’s goal as time expired in the first half made it 9-4.

“It’s not a close game, but we were in there,” Steamboat coach Betsy Frick said. “It never looked like they were dominating.”

Aspen (6-1 overall, 6-0 in the Mountain Conference) added four more goals in the second half for the final result.

Steamboat (0-7, 0-6) now preps for a home stretch of games starting Friday.

The team plays at 4 p.m. against Battle Mountain.

“It would be really nice to notch a win,” Frick said. “It’s not major things right now. It’s little things. The big picture pieces are there, we just have to put it together more frequently.”
