Steamboat briefs: Steamboat doctor readying for publication of 2nd book

— Dr. Dawn Obrecht, of Steamboat Springs, is just two weeks away from the release of her second full-length book. “From the Edge of the Cliff: Understanding the Two Phases of Recovery and Becoming the Person You’re Meant to Be” provides practical lessons on understanding and navigating the two phases of recovery from drug and alcohol addiction, according to a news release from publisher Richer Life. The 262-page book follows Obrecht’s 2009 publication of “Mission Possible: A Missionary Doctor’s Journey of Healing.” That book recently was nominated for a Montaigne Medal.

Obrecht specializes in addiction medicine. She also participates in SHe Writes Steamboat, an independent publishing meet-up group.

Rotary Club barbecue and dance is set for Sept. 22

The fifth annual Rotary Club of Steamboat Springs Community Barbecue and Barn Dance is Sept. 22 at Sidney Peak Ranch. The event features live music from Loose Change, food catered by Rex’s American Grill & Bar and lots of raffle prize packages. The family oriented event includes kids activities, dancing and a photo station. Advance tickets are $35 per person or $70 for families of five or fewer ($10 for each additional child younger than 16). Proceeds from the Barn Dance benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Steamboat and local charities funded by the Rotary Club of Steamboat Springs.

Routt County Republican Party has scholarship fund

The Routt County Republican Party has established a scholarship fund to help outstanding Routt County high school seniors further their education.

Two $500 scholarships will be awarded. To qualify for the scholarship, applicants must be county residents and plan to attend an accredited trade school, college or university. Applicants need to fill out a simple application form available at their high school, and submit a short original essay. The application deadline is April 10.
