Steamboat Springs Soroco High School may have been one of the smaller schools at the Warrior Wild West Invitational track meet Friday, but it didn’t stop the Rams from picking up some top finishes.
The Soroco girls team placed seventh in the meet and the Rams boys were ninth in a competition that featured teams from Grand Junction, Fruita-Monument, Glenwood Springs, Montezuma-Cortez, Grand Junction Central, Moffat County and Rifle. Rangely was the only other Class 2A school to compete.
Grand Junction High School won the girls team title, and Fruita-Monument pocketed the boy’s team title. The meet was held at Stocker Stadium in Grand Junction.
The Rams got top performances from athletes including Micaela Meyer, Josie Rossi, Lindsay Miles and several relay team teams on the girls side. Nic Paxton and AJ Anderson highlighted the boys showing at the team’s second meet of the season.
The top result of the day came from Meyer in the 100-meter hurdles. Meyer finished with a time of 18.06 seconds, second overall to Grand Junction’s Jamie Derrieux, who won the event with a time of 16.91. Meyer also was fourth in the women’s long jump with a distance of 14 feet, 3.5 inches.
Other top 10 showings for Soroco included Josie Rossi’s third-place finish in the high jump, seventh-place finish in the women’s 1,600-meter run and eighth-place finish in the 3,200-meter run. Jessica Rossi was eighth in the women’s 400-meter dash, and Lindsay Miles placed fifth in the long jump at 13 feet, 10 inches.
Meyer teamed up with Jaelyn Whaley, Haley Johnson and Madison George to place third in the 4x200-meter relay and fourth in the 4x100-meter relay. The Rams took third in the 4x400-meter relay with the team of Whaley, Jessica Rossi, Johnson and George.
On the boys side, Paxton took fourth in the triple jump with an effort of 38 feet, 5.75 inches, and teammate AJ Anderson was seventh in the high jump with an effort of 5 feet, 6 inches.
Soroco also was fourth in the men’s 4x200 meter relay with a time of 1:44.64. That team featured AJ Anderson, Joey Anderson, Paxton and Keenan Bradshaw.
