Steamboat volleyball downs Glenwood, 3-1

— The Steamboat Springs volleyball team was in trouble in the third set of its match at Glenwood Springs on Thursday night.

Having won the first set 25-17, the Sailors went into a funk, losing the second 25-13 and falling behind 15-11 in the third. Coach Wendy Hall had seen enough and called a timeout.

Hall "just told us to stay calm and come together as a team," said senior setter and co-captain Callie Hvambsal. "We needed to start picking each other up after mistakes."

Hall's pep talk resonated. The Sailors came out of the timeout and reeled off nine straight points behind the serve of Alex Feeley. From there, Steamboat outscored Glenwood, 39-17, and cruised to a 3-1 win.

"We stopped competing there for a little while," Hall said. "But then they fought back and really started to play better as a team as the game went on. What I saw that I really liked is that they are really starting to trust each other on the court. And when that starts to happen, you can get really good, really fast."

Different Sailors came up big in each game. Senior middle Amy Brodie led Steamboat in the first set with four kills and a block. It was Feeley with three kills in the second, and senior Maggie Stanford and junior Nikki Fry with four kills each in the third-set comeback. In the fourth, Stanford and senior Meghan Rabbitt had three kills each.

"I have total trust and confidence in all of our hitters," Hvambsal said. "I feel like I can set any spot, and we are going to get a good hit."

Stanford led the Sailors with 11 kills and three blocks. Brodie added eight kills and four blocks.

Jenna Pearce led Glenwood with eight kills. Kenzie Nelson-Buehler added seven kills for the Demons.

With the win, the Sailors improved to 7-3 overall and 2-1 in the Western Slope League. Steamboat next hosts rival Moffat County at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
