Steamboat football falls against Montrose, 54-0

Luke Graham

— A mere 22 seconds into Friday’s game in Montrose, Steamboat — which had to play a virtual perfect game to keep up with Class 4A’s No. 9 team — already found itself down a touchdown.

What ensued from there was a another blowout, this time Montrose making it a running clock by halftime en route to a 54-0 win.

The Sailors, now 0-3 on the season, have lost 14 straight games.

Steamboat started with the ball, and Christian Ramirez threw an interception on the Sailors’ first possession which was returned 35 yards for a 7-0 Indians lead.

For the second consecutive game, Steamboat gave up four second quarter touchdowns and found itself down 42-0 at halftime.

“We made way too many mistakes against a good team,” Steamboat coach Lonn Clementson said. “A team beats us 54-0, but I think we could have played with those guys. The mistakes just mounted.”

Steamboat opens up Western Slope League play at 7 p.m. Friday at Eagle Valley.
