Steamboat Springs The Hayden High School football team got its first victory of the season Sept. 10 in Idaho Springs, downing Yuma, 35-15.
With the score knotted at zero after one quarter, Hayden (1-1) erupted for 23 second-quarter points.
It started with a pass from Mark Doolin to Jorge Valdez to give Hayden a 7-0 lead. On the ensuing Indians drive, the Tigers forced a punt. Yuma snapped the ball through the back of the end zone to give Hayden a 9-0 lead.
Hayden went 14 plays before Ryan Domson capped the drive off with a 5-yard touchdown run. Domson then caught a touchdown pass at the end of the first half to make it 23-0.
“We were moving the ball well,” Hayden coach Shawn Baumgartner said. “Defensively, we played great. We knew our chances were going to come.”
The Indians cut the lead to 23-15 going into the fourth quarter, but the Tigers were too much. Doolin found Dakota Zehner late in the fourth quarter for the final result.
“It was a lot better” Saturday, Baumgartner said. “They really stepped up, and the kids made the plays when they needed to.”
Hayden next plays at 7 p.m. Friday at Grand Valley.
