Steamboat Springs A tractor and hay baler were engulfed in flames along with about a half-acre of hay in a South Routt field Saturday afternoon.
At about 3:30 p.m., Oak Creek Fire Protection District emergency responders and the Routt County Sheriff’s Office were called to the 23000 block of Routt County Road 29 — about halfway between C.R. 27 and C.R. 179.
Oak Creek Fire Chief Chuck Wisecup said he sent three trucks to the fire, which was caused by an electrical shortage on the tractor.
When fire crews arrived, the rancher and his family were trying to break up the rows of hay to stop the fire from spreading.
“It was a pretty good size,” Wisecup said. “We put a little over 3,000 gallons of water on it. It was spreading pretty good on those rows of hay, but not as much where the hay was cut.”
Wisecup said that the rancher was a little lightheaded from the smoke but that there were no injuries.
