Steamboat Springs — The Steamboat Springs High School boys soccer team has gotten the start to the season it wanted, but the Sailors can’t seem to get the start of a game they want.

Steamboat gave up an early goal but shined for the rest of the game Thursday in a 4-1 win against Glenwood Springs, improving to 2-0 on the season.

“To go 2-0 early in the season with both games coming on the road and against teams we had to come behind against, that’s pretty good,” Steamboat coach Rob Bohlmann said.

The Sailors fell behind in the game’s first minutes, but that fire already was extinguished and the dagger may have been in the heart of Glenwood by halftime.

Lance Ostrom scor­­­­­­ed first for the Sailors, tying the game. John Vande Velde gave Steamboat the lead moments later, and Vincent Kretzschmar capped off a series of passes from three teammates with an expertly executed shot from 20-yards out with less than a minute remaining in the first half.

“It was an absolutely brilliant goal,” Bohlmann said. “It was a crushing shot, and with the whole build up to it, it was a good goal.”

Enrique Lopez tagged one more goal in the second half to set the final score.

“It feels good. We’ve had a tough history over the years down there, and that’s a great way to open up league play,” Bohlmann said. “Things are really good in our camp right now. It’s only the first week of games, the early stages of the season, but I feel OK about things.”
