Volleyball highlights from the Steamboat Springs versus Middle Park volleyball match Thursday, Sept. 1, 2011, in Granby. Steamboat won 3-2.
Steamboat Springs The Steamboat Springs High School Sailors opened their 2011 volleyball season with a 5-set win against Middle Park on Thursday in Granby.
It wasn’t easy. The Sailors trailed in every set except the tiebreaker before emerging 25-20, 24-26, 18-25, 25-23 and 15-12. Last season, Steamboat lost its season opener to Middle Park, also in five sets.
“The critical thing to me is that they fought back,” Steamboat coach Wendy Hall said about her senior-laden team. “It’s pretty darn great to get a win against these guys. Seems like we always go five sets with them and we’ve been on the losing end a lot, so it’s good to win one.”
Senior setter Callie Hvambsal spread her sets around the floor, allowing five Sailors to get at least 5 kills in the match.
Senior middle Maggie Stanford had 4 kills in the tiebreaker, including one to win the match. She led the Sailors with 11 kills and 7 blocks, while senior outside Meghan Rabbitt finished with 9 kills. Senior Amy Brodie had 8 kills and 7 blocks, including a block on Middle Park’s Jenny Kinney that won Game 4.
Junior Nikki Fry added 7 kills for the Sailors, while junior Alex Feeley had 5.
Kinney, a 6-foot-1 senior, led Middle Park with 13 kills and 7 blocks. Sam Tracy added 10 kills for the Panthers.
Steamboat, 1-0, hosts Vail Mountain School in its next match. The match is at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
